My roommate in college did some of her psych training in prisons, and she even went on a police ride a few times! I was always too chicken for stuff like that and did all my training in the academic and suburban clinics.
Even when I got older and one of my mentors suggested that I consider prison psych like she did when the economy was bad, I couldn’t shake this scene in a movie where the inmate took the pencil he was using for a paper-pencil test and stabbed the psychologist in the neck.
In case it’s not terribly obvious already, I was very impressionable in my youth!
Of course, I have different opinions now, but I might have made more informed career choices had I had access to actual insider information way back when. Textbooks were useless, and news and movies were terrifying!
Anyway, thanks for sharing. I always enjoy your prison stories.
