Thanks so much for sharing your story as well as your learning process and job search strategy. 10 years ago, I dropped out of my PhD program in neuropsychology (mainly due to medical reasons but also because the politics and bullying were unbarable with my health condition — and the fact that there were and still are no distance learning options even for the coursework). I’ve been an entrepreneur since then and mainly working in marketing but dying to get back deep into research and science — outside of academia! (Thinking market research and/or UX research for health or education startup).

Having data science skills would make me a more competitive candidate for jobs, but I’ve intimidated with learning new “hard” skillsets. I learned some basic coding skills in javascript with Google’s Grasshopper app and have some general awareness of SAS and R from self-study (after using SPSS throughout schooling and prior research jobs). I still need to learn Python and SQL but remain intimidated as well as skeptical that anyone would hire me. I strongly relate to your story and feel encouraged to give it another go with programming and databases this summer.

There’s a plethora of relevant courses but no real guide to the best ones for people without computer science background. Planning to our suggestions for the courses with great instructors. Isn’t it great when learning new things is actually fun!??

Anyway, congrats on your skills and new job!

All the best!
